Thought I'd scored a serrated early archaic until I after I took an in-situ and reached to pick up this leaf. Gotta hate when they're black or brown like the majority of chert types here. I said, " You gotta be shi@$%# me ", laughed and walked on.

I'd have the best paleo collection ever if I had every leaf that tricked me into thinking it was a paleo point! It's amazing how quick our brains "fill in the desired outcome" so quickly.

Use a flip stick and keep poking that bird poop. We have a lot of Upper Mercer bird dropping flint that is called that because it looks like bird poop on a rock. Cool stuff when you find it.

Been there done that....another PIB is the black plastic pieces on the fields here, looks exactly like some of our darker and black cherts.

I used to joke with a buddy that, "In my next lifetime I'm going to start a leaf collection cause I would sure have a nice collection by now."

Made the poop mistake several times, but have come close to making a much worse error.

Twice, after casually surface hunting, my mind would associate with a pretty sure shape. I'd bend half way down to pick it up and suddenly stop when seeing many sure shapes.

Both times, it was the dark diamonds on the back of a rattlesnake.
Luckily, our rattlesnakes are not aggressive and it takes a lot to stir them up.

around here at the Local sites.. the Leaf fakes are nasty!! the most common point i find locally is the Malaga Cove and a number of the local bushes purposely grow leaves that look exactly like Malagas...

Never have done the bird dropping episode... so i guess that's a good thing....
