suggestions on digging

I always surface hunt, any suggestions on digging in the same areas where u find arrowheads and pottery? Also is there any way to find some old map of places where indians lived? Wanting to find some new spots. I'm right here in east texas close to sabine river and lots of major creeks.

Look in the creek and creek banks for signs of camps above. They camped on top, and all those artifacts that wind up in the creek are coming from an old camp. SO if you find alot of artifacts or flint/worked material, there is a camp nearby. Alot of the times if you will take the time to looks for flint, muscle shell, charcoal etc. washing out from the banks you will hit the jackpot. Sabine and Sulpher rivers, and any creek running into them are prime. Really focus on where smaller tributaries run into the rivers.

Thanks DBull. I notice i see some type of muscle shells that look alot different than muscle shells now. These are much rougher exterior, have lots of bumps on them. The ones we have no are pretty smooth. Also i do see alot of charcoal in places. There of tons of awesome places here if you could look on the sabine river authority land. Never understood why u can't surface hunt there.? Sucks.

Also would anyone have a idea of how far maybe they would have stayed away from the creeks? right on the banks? I know some tall creek banks that i squirell hunt around, never really looked though. There prolly 5-6 miles from the river though.

I would be really careful hunting anywhere around the Toledo Bend area. They are REALLY looking out for people taking artifacts from that area with the lake so low right now. Just saying

Oh yeah i know. To me thats kinda dumb that you can't pic up a arrowhead if your walking on a sandbar and see one. I mean to me it's better someone admiring it than wasting away never to be seen again. But there are lots of places here, tenaha creek runs into sabine river, and threw toledo. It flows threw lots of private land. It's actually made up of 2 creeks that join. I know where the two join thinking bout going and checking that spot out, just don't know if it would be worth it??? Tenaha creek is a indian word for muddy water. Or it's suppose to be anyway. lol.
