Best way to hunt
Well I've been at it for about a month or so and I feel I have been fairly successful for being new at this. I have found some promising spots but I feel I could be finding more points/artifacts. My question is how do you all hunt your areas? I tend to just walk around aimlessly lol. I only have one field I've hunted in and it hasn't been turned over in a very long time. All my other spots are areas along river/creek. I was thinking of using a grid pattern or maybe circle around the area so I'm not missing spots. Any suggestions??
Thanks! Last edited by trobbi33; 05-19-2011 at 12:48 AM. |

Row by row, from one end to the other and back and space it out so that you are within less than 5 feet from your previous pass. Walking around aimlessly will get you nowhere and you will miss way to much.
I usually pick a good spot in the field and walk about 50 yards and then turn and go back to where I started and then back and forth over that area. Then I move to another area and do the same. This works out great for huge fields. If I'm in a small field I hunt from end to end and cover it all. If I'm hunting a Ft Ancient site where the debris in concentrated very heavily in one area I will get down and crawl through the concentrated spots so I don't miss anything. People used to make fun of me until I started showing them all the Beads, Points, and Pendants I was finding.

I mostly hunt corn and soybean fields that have rows in them. I like to pick a good spot like Steve mentioned and look at the row to my left, the one I'm walking and then the one to the right so your scanning a three row area as you walk. At the end of the row I go over three rows and turn around and walk back. Start on the ridges in fields and look for flint...I've learned alot by studying the insitu pics on here so you can get an idea of what to look for...edges, tips, shapes and flint. The ones out sunbathing are easy pickings but once you train your eye on what to look for you'll start finding alot more.
