Question New Hunting Site Help

Hi I have a few fields that I hunt that are on top of some large hills above a creek. My question is that there is a different field that is down the hill from my fields and it borders the creek, it is a pretty flat field that gently slopes up the hill that my spots are on top of. Before I go and get permission I wanted to know if this might be a good spot to look? Do you think this is too close to the creek? Did Indians camp or use the flat spots next to big creeks the same way they did next to rivers? Any advice or knowledge or if anyone hunts spots similar to this please any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Depends on how long the creek has been there. Growing up in Illinois farm country, my grandfather told me about some creeks there that weren't there until they put in "field tiles," or diverted a different creek so they could 'square up' a piece of property.

Probably best to look for debitage of some sort, or ask the landowner. Farmers have land spread out at times, and if you ask about a certain piece to hunt, a farmer could always tell you he has another spot he farms that may be better.

I think you would have a very good chance of finding something in the lower ground near the creek and an even better chance if the field has been plowed but that can also depend on the soil conditions. I haven't had much luck finding things near a creek where the soil is fine and silty but have in the thicker clay soil. Try hunting on the higher ground first if the lower ground consists of loose soil and go from there.

I just got back from hunting a field that borders a creek. The field is at least 20' higher than the creek and I know that it has been there for a long time.....forever ????maybe since there are several camps along it in a 2 mile stretch that I hunt.
