Ever take your dog huntin' with ya?

I'm talking about artifact hunting. I have a huge Weimaraner and she's a great body guard and LOVES the outdoors. I'm not sure if anyone else has experience with bringing your dog on a hunt with you and how well they did. Love to hear some stories and pros and cons.

With the heat this time of year I would be hesitant if the dog isnt VERY used to the heat. She may run round in excitment and git overheated very quickly. Also there are the snakes to worry about. If the dog isnt watched VERY closely they may smell and go after a snake. You may think about gittin her snake trained. It could save her life some day. Be kind to your dog and leave her home in this heat. I guess I am assumin that you are in the south where it is VERY hot this time of year.

Suzy loves to hunt.Mr. Ellis made a good point about some of the cons of taking the hounds out this time of year.
Almost all of the spots I hunt are close to some water,,and Suzy will spend her time in the water ,,,Chasing,,Tad Poles.Ha ha ha .
She comes in real handy though when I am hunting new camp sites. She always finds the game trails and puts me in the right direction. Not much of a digger,,,but she is a Great scout.
Here is Suzy my "Bay Hound/Part Spaniel,,Part Beagle.

I take Molly out when the heat isn't too bad. She sure is pissed when I leave her behind.

She is half Border Collie and Australian Shepard.

All my spots are loaded with Water Moccasins and lots and lots of coyotes here too. My dogs wouldn't fare too well in the heat, and if she sees a rabbit, she's out of her mind.

I never have taken any of my dogs with me, but I had a buddy who used to take his St Bernard with him whenever we went hunting hunting. This dog was huge and the only thing it did was run through the field really tearing up the ground and I'm sure covering up or shoving Points into the ground with his huge paws. I finally told my buddy if he hunted with me the dog had to stay home and he could take him when he hunted by himself.

BAH, my response never showed up. But yeah the heat is a bit much if there wasn't a good water source, otherwise she'd run through some water and drink it I'm sure. But she'd never swim to a gravel bar with me. And she'd probably go bonkers over chasing birds and rabbits for sure. I'm thinking my Weimaraner is going to have to stay home! RMartin your Weimaraner is just gorgeous. I love this breed!

I usually end up taking two dogs. My wife has a black lab who is the worst artifact hunting partner ever and my daughters have a jack russel thats awesome. The lab likes to stir up the water run all over the fields and never listens. The jack russell stays close and listens. Water is seldom a concern and they are good company.
