Digging

Well I never thought I'd find a decent enough spot to justify digging let alone get permission from a landowner, but recently things seem to have gone my way and I have full permission to dig/sift anywhere on about 30 acres of land. I am completely new to this and hardly know where to start. Does anyone here dig regularly and not mind sharing how they usually go about it?

For starters, Locate chippy areas and test dig... On some of my most productive digging sites, It took me months to hone in and narrow in on the most productive areas.
Other sites I found stuff right off the bat. On the site that took me months to hone in on, I spent day after day after day digging in fire pits, etc. It started off by finding crude tools and uniface scrapers and broken in half preforms, etc... That gave me hope that there must be an area that had great potential. If it's a feild that you have found artifacts before and they appeared concentrated,, test dig that general vacinity first.

More advice... Check out diggin videos on utube. I.E. Richardsrocks. You can learn alot about how to dig by watching alot of his videos. Anyways, hope it gives you some kind of an idea of how to go about it..., Jason

Thanks! I'll look for that thread, and i never thought of youtube. If I didnt know anything about it this would be the last place I'd chose to dig, but I guess the previous owner found a few things here and there. Wish he was still around to point out where. Guess the smartest place to start would be where the gardens used to be.

Zach, it looks like there are some steep elevation changes on that map, any potential rock shelters in your permission area?.....it woulds be a good place to test dig if so.

I'm not sure, but I didn't think of that. I could at least try the south side of a few bigger boulders, but its mostly just a swampy area.

I think I'm heading over there today, I'll post whatever I find. All I know is that this was found somewhere on the property.
