Pecking marks
I found an almost perfece egg shaped rock that could be a hammerstone by chance. It was at the elementary school up the street from which I live. This school had a large addition added onto it, so they were tearing down trees that have been up for over 100yrs and a good deal of soil was disturbed. Someone had placed this rock on a light post footing (one of those cylindrical concerte tubes). So someone had a passing interest in it. It has some very small pot marks on small side and the rock is relatively smooth. Does someone have an example of what pecking might look like. I will see if I can get a photo of this rock.
Thanks, Jeff D. |

Here are two celts that show alot of pecking. Besides the polished bit business ends the rest of the pieces show evidence of being pecked / shaped into form.

Here is a mano/hammerstone/nuttingstone I found that had some heavy use and has a lot of pitting/pecking mark.
