a breeze and a whisper.......

tales from the artifact show

i usually get to one show a year just to show my stuff and see what others are finding.
was at a small new show today in sedalia-here are a few interesting stories:

met a guy who has a private artifact show once a month in his garage with 15-20
people invitation only-serious collectors/hunters all local-got an invite.

met an indian lady who was VISIBLY UNHAPPY to see my midden dug texas points-
when she asked i told her about the arrowhead diggin resorts all across the
state of texas-then 2 people standing there wanted resort names-and the indian
lady left when i wrote down the names.

one guy asked how much for my KILLER DRILLER and i told him nobody at this show
had enough money to buy my artifacts-i think he took it bad-he said that i couldnt
make that kind of statement cause i didnt know how much
money they can be worth- and walked off in a huff-maybe
he thought i was sayin he was a low dollar dude or
something-he seemed real offended (just stating the facts man-nothing personal).

a guy from my hometown was tellin a story how his great grandma was a full
blooded cherokee indian-to which i replied that my great grandpa was paid
to shoot indians.......it aint true, but i really like the reaction i get when i say that
in a crowd.

saw a personal found frame of arrowheads full of HOG STICKERS,
but all chunged up from gravel bar surfin'. i mean like 12 points 4 inches long-and turns out these
points come from the SAME CREEK on his neighbors land. i asked the dude if he
knew where the points were coming in to the creek at-no he says-how would i
know that? (broke it down to him-hunt upstream from arrowhead in the creek
looking for flint. when you stop finding flint, turn around. inspect the banks
right there.) he was so happy to know that he gave me a tip on a different
creek.-

met an art knapper who is a MASTER-he told me that he quit making
accurate reproductions cause they ALWAYS end up in the market.
he makes nodules with HALF an arrowhead sticking out-like
kerville knife with rind on one half-and a 5 inch dalton where the
blade would be!

met WILY-long bearded bushwacker (who recognized a recent in-situ
on my table in in my scrapbook)from arrowheadology and he asked if
i knew willybee! then he asked my real name and was suprised to
find out that willy was my real name.

met a lady who asked if my camo hat was to keep people from seeing
me while i hunt arrowheads-i leaned toward her and said in a quiet
voice> lady if everything went right, you felt a breeze and heard a
whisper-and all the artifacts disappeared....................

always learn something new at an artifact show.

willy

That sucks, but that's the way it is nowadays, ain't it.

yep-wily is a member here-and from my area.
here are a couple of pictures of georges work-
this dude is famous for his art and is one of the
most knowledgeable people i have ever met.

he sat down at my table and went through my
(ash tray points) -about 50 killer brokes- and
TRIPPED out on the broken reed spring chert
dalton and my mozarkite navy blue dickson.

roy motley convinced me my hidden valley was
really a dickson-i actually challenged that dude
on his TYPOLOGY-ha! (before i knew who he was!)
he was taken aback by my argument-but beat
me in the information duel-guy knows a LOT-
best authority on missouri flint i ever heard.

strange he would pick that one broke point-
its my favorite broke also.

georges work below.

Great stories Willy thanks for sharing that with us and thanks for posting the pics of the flint knapping. That would be really cool if it had the base knapped out like it is and the tip knapped out on the other end with the nodule still in the middle.

**I dont understand why the lady was at the show to begin with if she had problems with how the artifacts were found. Sounds like she was maybe trying to cause trouble or spy perhaps.**

**The guys that asked how much for your driller was seeing if he could take advantage of you by trying to lowball you. In my youth, I collected postage stamps (still have them) and whenever I was at a show with my really old ones, people constantly tried to lowball me to get them for practically nothing.**

Just my opinions though, interesting read willybee. There must be more to the show!

My thoughts exactly. I remember a guy at a dig taking a big dirt clod and sticking a broken base in one side, and a broken tip of similar material and size out of the other side.
