Raven Rock

OOPS, meant to post this in Hunting/Camping. Can a mod move it?

I assume most of you guys enjoy hiking. This is a place in the Red River Gorge on the border of Powell/Menifeecounty. Thought you guys would enjoy the picture of the bedrock mortar. And these aren't my pics, (I don't have a good camera) but I've been to the place three times. It's an amazing place and thankfully not many people go all the way up there.

A pic from the top-

Some pics of the rock shelter and the bedrock mortar-

I can't seem to find a good pic of the rock itself. Here's the best I could find-

It's completely natural, formed over millions of years. Tons of places like that in the RRG.

And this still hasn't been moved to Hunting/Camping...

Love this place. Took my wife there last weekend. It's 200 miles from my house but well worth the road trip. I have spent many hours hiking and climbing these hills. Raven Rock was going to be a tourist attraction w/ a store on top but every time they tried to open it somebody died hang gliding off it. Foundation and the road to the top are still there.

Dude, that's awesome! Cool to see another Gorge hiker here.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the history of it. You saw that little building about 2/3 of the way up, right? I'm still not sure what that is.

I think the building was part of the tourism effort that the guy finally gave up on. The upper red is an insane kayak trip if you are up to class threes... wear a helmet and pack a lunch. Yeah I can't get enough of the place myself. There is some sweet dirt biking south of natural bridge around Mckee. If I could find work down thar I would be building a cabin on a ridge.

If I had it my way, I'd spend EVERY weekend hiking and climbing at the gorge. I've been there at least 20 times over the past 18 years. I've attached some of my more recent trips up Raven Rock for your enjoyment. These pics were taken in 2008, but I hiked up it in April of 2011, as well.

I've also attached a pic of the building CDEAN was referring to at one of the earlier switchbacks...

Also, I can't take credit for this shot, but I love the image of Raven Rock in this photo...

Cool pics. I'm usually able to take time off to go to the Gorge a couple weekends every month, and I've been going there for a few years now. Sunday before last we hiked to Cloudsplitter, and it was my first time there. I had been trying to find it (unsuccessfully) for a while. It's now a close second to Raven Rock as my favorite spot in the Gorge. Oh, and 5,000 year old squash rinds and other artifacts have been found in the rock shelter on the side of it, so it has archaeological significance too.
