Finds from an antique auction...
went to an auction this past weekend intending to bid on a rifle, I didn't win that, but there happened to be some frames of arrowheads also on the lots list. out of two frames I bought here are 5 points I like the most, one especially
. The one frame I bought was purely for this arrowhead in the frame. The background on the frames I bought is that they were found In Holt County, Nebraska. Clear back when the state was putting Highway #20 in,which runs the lenght of the state from east to west, these points were found along this stretch of construction, along with the rest of the collection that was up for auction. I will try to get some better pictures up once I have some sunlight to work with. They sure look like the real deal to me, the material is for sure right for the area i live in, but I have been known to be wrong a time or two. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated rather they be good or bad. Anyhow here are the pics![]() ![]() ![]()

The ones in the top pic all look just like the modern knap jobs, but I'm not familiar with your types there so I hope I'm wrong.
The other ones look good to me. |

I agree with you Scotto, I had the same feeling. The last three pictures are all the same point, this is the one I am most interested in getting some feedback on.

The top 4 all appear to be made by the same person. Can't really see the larger one that well but what I get from the pic is lack of any edge wear, steep flake terminations, and something about the base configuration just don't look right. Check them with a jewelers loupe for any mineralization. and metal marks in the narrow entry notching.

Yes, that was my thoughts as well to the 4 points that they were more than likely modern points. The frame was cheap so at least I dont have much invested into them. As far as the last point goes, I talked to the gentleman that found this point along with the others in the frame and he was telling me about where he found them. I know that still doesnt make them "real" anyone can make up a story about where an artifact was found. This is the down side to buying rocks at an auction like this one. Atleast when I find an artifact I know 100% that it is an authentic artifact. Thanks for the responses everyone.

Sounds like you kinda knew they weren't good! As for him finding those, well some people over time believe their own stories they made up!!!
if It was cheap, not much harm done!!right??

IMO, the first four are brand spanking new. I don't have a good feeling about the last one, either. There's a fair amount of pressure flaking and edge retouch to make it very symmetrical, but the side to side contours remain kinda funky with deep flakes between high spots. That kind of emphasis on symmetry is a trait of modern knappers, but not that big a deal on many old points.

They look the type that come from India and are made from colorful Agates.
