Total novice here in CenTex - does this place sound promising to hunt?

Hi. My name is Alan. Interested in learning more about this hobby. I want to become more aware of my surroundings and be able to surface hunt. Digging may come later.

My family has 10 acres in Lampasas County, Texas. Adjacent property has a high knob where a spring-fed/wet-weather creek originates. It runs downhill and separates our land from our neighbor's. About 100ft from the creek on our property is a flat hilltop that is 20-30ft higher. There is a big grove of oaks in the middle, 3 of which are easily over 100 years old. The backside is sloping, and from on top, you can overlook game trails all around. The area of the flat spot on top of the hill is at least a few thousand square feet - big enough for a campsite.

I found a rock there a few years ago. To me, it looked like it had been altered by man. I'm just not sure what it is, or if it's naturally occurring. I'm on a train at the moment, but will post photos on the What Is It forum in a couple hours. I'll post a link in this thread.

I'm hoping to just hear some feedback about how the location sounds and on the rock/artifact.

Thanks!

Where would you locate the pits? On the hill and by the creek? About how deep would you dig?

The hilltop is rocky and pretty bare (especially with the drought).

I would kinda go Randomly around,,,,as all camps differ. In some middens more points are found on the edges
Some in the Middle.
I would start where there is flint first of all. Then I would look for the smaller flint reductions. That show to be good finishing flakes. In our area the Midden dirt is very distinctive ,,,,If you start finding stuff.Dig all the way down to the hard Pan,,,then dig atleast a few inches deeper.Just to make sure you have went through any and all "Habitation layers////c
