winter in the corn fields
Does anyone hunt cornfields at this time of year, I mean cornfields that still have the feed corn still standing unharvested? Seems like it would be tough hunting but I would think you should be able to spot a few points if you spend some time in there, just might have to take a compass along so I don't get lost though!

Welcome aboard. I've hunted corn fields in every stage of growth you can think of. It's not as much fun this time of year, that's for sure. If you have super rich sites and the farmer doesn't care and you haven't already walked it a thousand times this year go for it I say. I will hunt water sites and just about anything else I have first and use dead corn stands as my last resort.
As a funny side note, my dedicated and reckless nephew/hunting partner thinks it would be a great time of year to hunt fields he does't have permission for, his idea is to wrap himself in dead cornstalks for camoflauge! He also thought about dressing up for halloween this way.

He figures to use the disquise all year around, even in open fields, says it will look like the farmer just missed a spot! We all were laughing so hard trying to picture it, every time a car comes by you freeze like a deer in the headlights... lol marksimerson, we got some snow but not much, mostly melted, more on the way tonight though.

Here in southeast Michigan the ground is free of snow, we had lots of rain though this week so the fields are probably real mucky, I'll find out tommorow.

Usually later in the year once the corn dies down it gets overgrown by weeds

I've had excellent! luck this year walking standing corn, it's tough when it's green, plenty of sawgrass cuts on your face, but when it browns, the leaves fall to the side and makes the rows better.
Just be gentle walking the rows so you don't knock the stalks over where they can't be harvested. The rain all years pounds all the excess dirt from the raised part of the rows and leaves the artifacts behind...I also seem to have better luck on rows that are more disturbed, rather than completely flat. Some farmers use more weed-kill and I've found perfectly clean earth rows and then go over a few and you can't see any bare ground. I would highly recommend wearing a B-Ball cap to protect your eyes and face, and this time of year, Hunter Orange is the smart man's color.
