Untouched Shelters

Out walking in the desert and came into several rock shelters that look like they have not been disturbed. One still had a fire ring and they all had pottery shards scattered over the ground. Only found one broken drill but sure is fun to see sites that are just like they were left. Back walls were black and lots of burnt bone and broken rock.

I love looking at sites like that, peaceful and pure.

Oh my. What an awesome little spot to find. I couldn't stay away from a spot like that.

Yeah, that is really neat. I don't know if I could handle it, I would probably pick up every pottery shard there was in the hopes of putting one back together again.

Love shelters. Lots of them here in Montana. I have found a couple over the years that still had logs and material leaned up against them. Lots of them still have fire scarring and rings, and even some seats made out of rocks.

That is so neat. I hope you can find them again and locate lots of treasures.

I think I'd have to at least make 'em look dug until I could get back out there. Pick up all signs before someone else runs across them. You could've just fell into a couple good ones.

Nearly all of the accessible shelters here in KY have been dug out by people hunting for artifacts. I don't have that big of a problem with digging for artifacts in itself, but it's how they do it that angers me. They destroy the entire shelter environment, they don't even try to be careful and respectful of the delicate ecosystem that exists in shelters, and I'm sure they don't record detailed find info.

The rest are few and far between, and usually require alot of bushwhacking to find. Finding a pristine, untouched shelter is one of my current goals.

Just a visitor

I agree with you guys but I am just a visitor down here. We travel to different places every week or so and I don't want to change what I see out in the desert. If I found these at home I would hide the shards and plan on returning out to them. I do mark them with my GPS but mostly so I can find them next winter when we pass here again. I have a few camp sites down south of here that we have found artifacts in the wash and around the fire pits. Will get some photo's and post them later this winter. Thanks for the fun of sharing this with you guys.
