Best Areas to find Campsites?
Hi all,
I'm planning on going out on this pretty large piece of land to hunt, in Brazos county, Texas. I've been attempting to research the most likely campsite areas to check on the land and have a couple of questions. From what I've read I take that the best areas are high ground near water, and there is a creek running through the land that has pretty high cliffs around it in some areas. The creek also has a pretty major tributary running in to it. There is also a spring in one spot on the land. From your experience, where are the most likely places to find a campsite? The highest point in the area? The strip of land between two creeks? Perhaps the area near high cliffs? Or maybe the spring? Does direction matter? For example, I've heard that east facing areas are a good spot to look. And then lastly it seems the main indicator of a good site is usually flint flakes or burnt rock. Do you have to dig test holes to find the flakes and burnt rock indicating the campsite, or are they strewn on the surface in most cases. Alright, sorry for the long post, I'm having a bit of trouble gathering information. Any help is greatly appreciated! |

You are correct on high ground near water, but I have found smaller hills to be beter than tops of cliffs. If you have cliffs you might look for over hang area that could have been used as shelters. If you have a spring, you have a great area. Look for hills near the spring with burnt rock and or flint chips. You will also find artifacts in the creek beds in the gravle bars. good luck sounds like a great hunting spot! im a little jealous! lol

Lokk for areas that not only have East but South facing views as well, to catch more of the winter sun.
High areas are great, but wind protected high areas are better.

it sounds like you have a pretty good idea, and bulletproof gave some good advice as well. one thing I can add is that most of the campsites I find have good drainage wether it be a steep hill on the side of it or more likely some good drainage ditches around or near it. I can also tell ya, dont get overly excited and wear yourself out, take it easy, dig test holes in different places, think about where you would camp, and good luck.

I have had my best luck on the strip of land between creeks. springs are right on top of my list also.
