Getting the OIL off
Does anyone have experience getting motor oil off of points?
I got this Ohio collection a while back and the one Adena style point ( far right in the pic) looks to have been soaked in motor oil. Why did they do that? Fake patina? Anyway so far I've tried dish liquid and soap and a toothbrush, but that's not working too well... any suggestions?

Yes, Goof off, Goo Gone or any of the Citrus degreaser cleaners will dissolve that oil off...and leave your points smelling citrus-y fresh
![]() yes, i'd like to know why Anyone would soak a Point in Motor oil ![]() Nice little collection..

If it's not coming off with mild detergent and a soft brush...... I'm not taking it off.
If it's been soaked in motor oil I'd seriously consider that it was a fake. But even then it should come off pretty easily, I'd think, unless they cooked it on. More likely, it's just a weird patina and you're going to do more harm than good by putting chemicals on it.

I'll post finished pictures after I cleaned it ( this is the only point I've ever attempted to clean and will be the last).

I've seen similar that were creek stained and came amazingly clean after a soaking in hydrogen peroxide. Not my cup of tea but it sounds like you're determined to get it off. Good luck.

OK, The Goof Off worked about as well as the soap and water...which wasn't very good.
You can see parts of this stuff that is shiny, I really do think it's baked on oil... Next I'll try Peroxide as drdave suggested, then if that doesn't work, I might try gasoline... I don't have any acetone...but may try that if the gas doesn't work. thanks for all the suggestions.

I'd leave it be Buckeye... Are you 100% certain it is motoroil??? Could it be a carbonized decay that crusted on?

I have arrowheads that have heavy creek staining that look just like that. Almost solid black/ dark brown. Check out my misc. album in my profile page. The avatar I use(the lance), I soaked that in vinegar for a few weeks and it came out clean. The b4 picture Is the one in the album next to the calculator.
Imo try cider vinegar, Idk y but it seems to work better than regular vinegar. |
