Starr Hunt Jan28/29

Wanted to get back to you guys on my little side trip to Starr Adventure Ranch…
After some trials and tribulations getting a rental car in Columbus, I finally headed there Saturday morning. Minor confusion with the directions was cleared up with a quick call to Craig.
Now, after spending Saturday and part of Sunday both digging and surface hunting, I have to admit that I got skunked. Dug a handful of bases and tips, something that might be a spokeshave. The one surface find was a broke that was just lying on the cow path back to the car, wasn’t even really looking …but it was hard to miss.
Saw some nice finds…a woman not 30 feet from me picked a perfect rootbeer Perd off the surface. You’ve seen pics already of the killer Darl knife that popped out (again) not 20 feet from where I was digging.
Don’t get the wrong idea…I had a blast! I’ve never done something like that, and may never get the chance again, but digging somewhere that there was a chance of finding something was cool. Weather couldn’t have been better, met some very nice helpful people. Texas hospitality can’t be beat!
I would recommend Craig’s place to anyone. I know some of you Texas guys don’t “need” to travel that far and pay, but for some of us it’s the chance of a lifetime.
Craig very kindly asked me to “do him the honor” of accepting one of his finds as a gift since I didn’t find any complete points…so I have a very nice needle-point Perd to take home!
Many, many thanks to Midlandman for the use of his tools and for letting me crash at his place overnight! It was a bonus to be able to see his museum quality collection!

This is what this forum is all about…helping others, any way you can, to get the most out of the hobby and ultimately out of the hours and days that we have to pursue dreams. They are all too few.

Thanks, guys.

Glad you had a good time! Craig is a super fellow, I wish the artifacts were just a little more thickly concentrated there, but I'd still give the site another go. Let's see a pic of the stuff you did bring home!

I would love to see the gift point as well.
I think the Pedernales point is one of the most desirable Types to collect for any collector.

I must say as a Central Texas Digger.I myself run an average 1-2 complete points out of say 6 trips out.Discounting the times I hit a "Bacon Strip,,,,Thats the breaks.
I hope you get more chances to Dig Texas cause when your in-em,,,It's Fun and exciting////c

I will get a pic on here eventually. I left everything with my wife (she's still dog training in SC) because I flew back with only carry-on, and I wasn't sure they'd let me take pointy rocks with me.

One other thing I found, for those interested in the historic "trash" that also permeates the site...part of a logo from the base of a ceramic plate. "Pratt & S----", logo is a crest with a beehive. No luck Googling for info. "Prattware" is all that comes up for me, and no indication that they used such a design. I was hoping it might date the residence which must surely have stood there, but no luck so far.

I have a pretty good amount of the Historic pieces from here as well. I'd be interested in if you ever find out anything resembling a date for your plate piece. It was nice having you here and showing off my small collection. If you ever get back this way we'll have to dig together.
