Using kayaks for searching for sites in New England

Well, the wife and I are saving up for a pair of kayaks to ply the waters around my area, ex/Merrimack river, etc. We are almost there with the money to get a pair of kayaks. My question, how do you look for sites while on the water, any specific landscape feature to look at? Any help for a newbie would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Jeff, just as you would expect, look for any outcrop along the river, look for places where creeks flow into the river..really no different then would you would think. I also look for a high river bank thats been eroded away..for me they are usually around a bend but not always. I think I'll float the holston tommorrow!

Jeff, in addition to the good advice offered by beargrass, always check gravel bars if they have arrowhead-sized rock scatter.

My wife and I have hunted gravel/sand bars via a tandem kayak for many years. Walking gravel bars takes a practiced eye but you can make some incredible finds on them. What keeps me at it is the possibility of finding a paleo point on the gravel is typically much higher than field hunting. Good luck.
