Ornament??

I found this piece in Harris County, TX. I was interested in hearing everyone's opinions on it. I thought it could be some sort of ornament. I'm not familiar with the material either.

i think maybe a tool used in weaving or making rope.

Boy that's a nice little find. I can see it being used for the purposes Jimt mentioned, but my guess is that it was used for personal adornment. Heck of a find!

Bt, Does it look and feel like unglazed porcelain? Old toasters, waffle irons, etc. had insulaters in them similar to your piece. Hope its an artifact. Will

Thanks for ideas. I'm going to have to take it to a show to get an id on material. I tried to look up some insulators & couldn't find anything that looked like it...but it very well could be.
