Please type this new mailbox find.
Hello,
Seller called this fella a kirk. I'm not an expert in typology yet, but wouldn't this be a lost lake? From Shelby County, KY. Is this patinated carter cave, hornstone or sonora, perhaps? Please help, what do you think?

I need to get better daytime shots. There's a few honest dings on the side that clearly show a darker gray, almost hornstone like color.
I will try and take some better pics tomorrow. So, you are thinking a kirk vs. a lost lake?

Lost lake would be beveled on opposite sides. Natural light is the best way to get the true color.

I'm pretty sure the material is Fort Payne. And yeah, it looks like a Lost Lake to me.

Most all Lost Lakes will show beveling from resharpenings. But if it's a first stage Lost Lake it won't show any beveling. I have one that I found in Greenup county Ky that hasn't had any resharpenings yet, so it doesn't show any beveling and I am certain it's a Lost Lake.
This piece could very well be a Lost Lake and then again it could be a Kirk Corner Notch Point. They are both from basically the same time period and are very similar in design. Here is my Lost Lake that is a first stage and has never been resharpened. It has heavy grinding on the base and the typical Punch Notching that is a trait of Lost Lake Points. Flintseekers Point looks very similar to mine. The only drawback I see to flintseekers Point is the size. My Lost Lake is well over 3 inches long and unless his hands are huge that piece is probably under or right 2 inches and most true Lost Lakes are bigger than that. Any Lost Lake I have seen that small has been very heavily resharpened and sharply beveled.

Thanks for everyone else's input, as well! I guess I do have big hands, lol... It measures in at just over 3 inches.
