Question about material and type
I was wondering if any of you Illinios or neighboring states guys might know what this material is? Found in Macoupin Co. Ill. I'm sure you might guess the collection it is from. As for typology I have called it a thebes with dovetail traits or a dovetail with thebes traits. I was just wondering what others opinions about type are? doves from out my way don't have this look. Either way it looks pretty good in my bevel frame. Any help is apperciated. Stats on the piece are 5-3/8" x 2-1/2". Thanks, Scott

I'd call it a dovetail. A shame it is written on. Killer artifact and beautiful material.

Cool piece. I like the writing on it. It kind looks like a big Thebes to me.
No offense intended to his memory, but from his auction it was pretty obvious Townsend wasn't afraid of a rechipped piece, I've often wondered if people didn't heat treat some of those old pieces to bring out extra color. Of course he had the means and lifespan to acquire the most colorful examples. |

If it's a material that doesn't currently have a name I'd like to nominate Kick Ass Chert.

Scott, I too think it looks more like a Thebes than a Dove, though it does have similar traits of both types.
As for the material, I really don't know but I do have one that is similar and I haven't figure out the material on it either.

Really interesting material on that Thebestail or is that a St. Thebes... I can't call it, killer point though.

I'm stuck too on type.
Josh, I agree he was not afraid of rechip pieces, you had to be careful that's for sure. I'm happy to say I missed out on buying a rechipped piece. He did have one super collection though and I can't wait to see the rest. Thanks all for the replies. Scott |
