Got Shot At

Basically my wife and I went hiking on property owned by her family. Shortly after our arrival we hear constant firing coming from a little community adjacent to the property. No problem I am a gun owner as well. We found a wash, and found some interesting features we poked around down there for about 45 minutes, and then walk back to the truck to eat a snack, the firing lets up for the first time. One of the people from the community drives up and and I introduce myself, he says he has never heard of the landowner. No problem I have been to the county and seen the deed of title while doing a favor for the landowner/family. He wasnt sure who owned the land, he was just checking on us, I tell him i appreciate it. The conversation ends in a handshake. We start back out onto the property the shooting begins again. I see a well eroded surface and walk toward it, a bullet hits the dirt within about 10 yards from us, then two more over our heads we get the hell out of there, and call law enforcement. They found the shooter who claims he was target practicing, he didnt know we were out there and was extremely sorry.

I cant say a whole lot more about it right now, but the shooter was trying to scare us off with his shots in our direction, he trespassed on the property to set up the targets, he has shot continuously everytime other family members have been out there trying to hunt, and probably stole their deer feeders, along with committing other crimes related to preventing the landowner and his representatives from gaining entry to their own property.

The end result the dumbass wont be shooting across a private property line, leaving him no direction to shoot targets, and there are other remedies coming his way. Its idiots like him who harm reponsible gun owners by giving ammuntition to the anti gun crowd.

ps Found good reason to take my wiggle pick out there when all of this gets settled.

WOW!!! That's pretty figgin frightening..

I'm a big advocate of gun rights and responsible shooting too...and I agree these are the Jerks that mess it up for us. I hope this gets resolved with a decent outcome for you.

Man, that's scary as hell. I'm a gun owner as well but always make sure I am shooting in a direction that will not endanger anyone. I hope the guys gets his ass fried for being such an idiot.

Good luck upon your safe return to the property.

I'd be surprised if he was shooting at you if the shooting went on for an extended time and considering the bare dirt part but it's wanton endangerment in either case and you have grounds for a civil suit if you so desire. Especially considering the property issue.

restraint and return

I was extemely angry, my adrenalen was through the roof, but at that time I didnt know the exact house the shooting came from. I now know where the shooting came from, and where the targets were set up. We were not behind the targets we were at a 45 degree angle. I have little doubt that he was trying to scare us off by shooting at us.

I am proud of my wife, after everything is settled she wants to finish our walk that we had started.

We made it back out there today. There was peace in the valley. No shots fired. The shooter got lined out last week, I will leave it at that. Great day for evaluating the property for the potential for artifacts. I found a pile of flint knapping stones pokiing out of the surface, a couple of unifaces, and a smile pille of flint flakes tightly packed together eroding onto the surface. All features were several yards apart. We will return with digging tools and a screen next time.

Thanks for the support guys!

Man, I can appreciate you being pissed, but the only advice I can give you is to be careful. Don't let your anger get the best of you and do something you may regret if this idiot shows back up. It's run-ins like this that people get shot and killed. You did the right thing by calling the law. They are now aware of the situation and more than likely will keep an eye on things. Glad to hear you and your wife are okay.
