Points per mile?
Granted, I am new to seriously hunting arrowheads, but my point per mile ratio must be horrible! Over the past several months I have been on numerous hunts, like several a week! And I have yet found a single point. I have researched my hunting grounds and look in what seem to be prime areas. I have found much worked stone, some tools, and I have been in one creek that looks like it is made of scrapers! But still no points! Yesterday I spent 8 hours in a single creek, slowly making my way through ice at 15 degrees with no luck. On this same creek, on my last hunt there, my buddy found a super nice drill almost 4" long so I know artifacts are there. With the help of arrowheadology I have developed an eye for worked stone and I have found points in the past. I guess I am just ranting a bit but I just wonder if my point per mile is that much worse than most, or I need some better spots? After looking at all the recent finds you guys are getting I am still stoked for some more hunts! Thanks Guys!

A lot of it depends on where you hunt. Some areas have a lot more artifacts in them than others, and the style of hunting you pursue (creek walking, plowed fields, lake shores) can also play a huge role in how many you find. I live in an area where I very rarely get skunked and can sometimes find double digits in a single day - but most of them are ugly, stubby little Gary points out of Ogallala chert!

Just keep at it! No matter how many skunks you get.
Be creative in your hunting approach (think outside the box). Go the extra mile. Check areas you've had a hunch about but have never gone. Do not procrastinate. As far as the creek you speak,,,Try and beat any competition by arriving before light (with flashlight if need be) And last but not least,, get ahold of that kayak we talked about so we can float some honeyholes I know of on the river!!! |

Missouri boys kick out some fine artifacts, i have a killer Missouri collection that i inherited about 120 pieces collected over 40 years, that works out to like one every 121 days and thats if you look every day, so i think you average is above average , in fact your killin them , i guarantee you the time between finds will be soon forgotten, keep posting the pics

Just payin your dues Brother.....!! LOL Everyone (at least most ) does it. The good days will eventually make up for more than the bad. That one 5" Etley will make you forget about all the brokes.....just ask Jason...LOL
Keep you eyes open and your head down....LOL HH

Try slowing down or speeding up, but hunting in ice at 15 degrees is tough for anyone.
I have some paleo areas where one decent point and some brokes per two day hunt is great, I have other non-paleo sites where I can pick up stuff every few minutes. It depends on the site. When you get a bunch of sites that you can hunt, you can kind of pick based on your mood. When I don't have much time or I am in the mood to find stuff, I usually dig or walk one of the more recent sites that are littered with pottery. When I am interested in finding something early, I hunt some of my early areas where I have to cover a lot of ground to find something. Sometimes I pick a day and just dedicate myself to chasing down leads and finding new sites. Last edited by joshuaream; 01-23-2012 at 05:56 AM. |
