Caddo Pot wife found
Just going through some old photos on photobucket. Here is a caddo pot my wife dug a few years back. Its been awhile since I posted any pictures of my pottery.I got boxes and boxes of pottery some never seen by anyone.I have not seen some in over 10 years. One day I hope to go through them and take some pictures.I been to lazy to dig it all out. This pottery site is now gone forever and we salvaged many pots from the coal mines. Whats sad the contract archaeologist said their was nothing to salvage.I guess they didn't know where to look.

Very Nice!
I have pottery pieces from the Bend but not a whole one. I would probably crap my pants if I exposed that in a wall I was digging... |

Great pot. The more I see some of the caddo utilitarian pieces like that, the more I think some of those guys occasionally vacationed south of the border. If you had said that pot was from Central or northern South America I would have been perfectly comfortable believing it. Normally, southern pieces don't pass for northern pieces and vice-versa.
Don't knock archies missing pieces, if they got them all I wouldn't find very much. I've redug many sites that were dug years before. If it was an 40 or 50 year old dig, the best place is usually under their trash pile. |

Interesting thoughts Joshua. Some of the best pottery in the South and other regions does resemble Meso-American design. By the time that pottery was made in the US, they must have begun the trade routes that still existed when Europeans came. We just do not know when ideas began spreading, or the full extent of trade, but we get these little parts and pieces of the puzzle.

You are very lucky to be in a area where its possible to find whole pots. Here in the Ozarks all I have ever found are shards. I've seen a few wholes over the years, way few and far between. On the subject of contact between mesoamerican ndn's and northerners, I have heard stories of Comanches and Kiowas traveling south of the border to hunt and trade. It was told to me that it was a rite of passage to do so. I know that people from my own tribe traveled to the baja and the sea of cortez to gather mother-of-pearl.
