Clovis Pre-Preform
Figured it was about half past time I showed & told something, so here is a Clovis platter core on the edge of going into (the next step in the knapping continuum) a point preform, since it's thin enough at this point (0.75") that the remaining blade-flakes that will be removed will be too thin to stand up to heavy use as tool blanks.
Those who have been studying the Bob Patten Book (Peoples of the Flute) and the Carl Yahnig (My 101 Favorite Artifacts) book on the Little River Paleoindian Complex should recognise what it is pretty easily. It's Hopkinsville chert (a variety of Ste. Genevieve) (a.k.a. Kentucky Hornstone) from Christian County, Kentucky. The whitish stuff is a chalky patination that Hopkinsville is prone to. 4.5" X 2.25." |

Very cool!
Was it found with anything else? |

It was apparently an isolated find.
Twenty years ago, probably nobody but Carl Yahnig would have even brought it back home with him. |
