Indian Artifact Show At SSU In Portsmouth, Ohio

There will be an Indian artifact show held at the Student Union of Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio on November the 8th and 9th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM each day. I haven't gotten all of the details yet, but from what I was told on the phone when I got the invitation to set up a display of my artifacts was that it is being set up by Matt Matthews who I believe is over the Cultural Affairs at the university. I was also told that there will be flyers and posters distributed around the campus and around Portsmouth within the coming week or so to advertise the show.

There used to be a show held every year at the Vern Riffe center but a lack of funding put an end to that one in 2006 I believe. That show was rather large and had 25 to 30 displayers each year and this one is by invitation only and will be smaller but will still have lots of nice artifacts to see according to the displayers I was told would be in attendance. They are hoping this will be a success and they can do it annually. The reason for the show being held on a Tuesday and Wednesday during the midday is to try to get the local schools to bring in students on a field trip to view the displays.

Since space is limited I won't be bringing a lot of my collection and will probably just set up a collection I just finished putting together of artifacts from all 49 continental United States. I didn't worry about Hawaii since they are Polynesian and not American Indian. It took me 3 years to complete this project and I have acquired some very nice artifacts from around the country. I am also going to bring some pieces I have from Venezuela, Mongolia and possibly even Nova Scotia if they arrive in the mail soon enough.

It should be a very good and informative show and I hope to see some of you there.

Hi Steve, wish Team Hartman could make it. I would love to see your state collection. Plus, there are some nice pieces that come out of Portsmouth. I bet it's one heck of a show.

I wish you could make it down as well Don. It's an invitation only show as far as displayers so I feel honored to have been asked to display. They also said it would be small show with only around 8 or 10 displayers depending on how much room they have, but with who he mentioned will be displaying there will be some very nice pieces there that showcase our area very well.
