That sounds like a great idea, I've always been interested in learning where the material I find comes from.

The problem is that it would be completely unworkable. The number of specific chert types alone would be off the wall, and many of the major varieties have gazillions of minority varieties. Edwards, Ft. Payne and Flintridge especially could run on for page after page. After page.

It IS a really great idea, but it's not a feasible one, I'm afraid.

I can see your point as to the many types but the same could be said for point types. We could just do major stuff from the areas to help and if they want to see what type of aget or chert they have they can do it on there time. But a good starting poiint is needed I think.

There are a lot of different types but I think it's still a great idea. In my area there might be an almost limitless number of types because of the use of glacial cobbles but that being said the vast majority of all artifacts that are found in the state are still made from just a small handfull of different materials and those would be easy enough to ID. Maybe it could be split up into regions to make it better organized??? A midwest, west coast, ohio river valley, east coast, deep south, texas, etc?

Maybe there could be a permenant sticky thread in a certain section like arrowhead hunting and collecting? People may double post a lithic as long as its not a repeat link and the attached stuff isnt questionable (positive of material) maybe that would be a good compromise if the people runntin the site doesnt want a new area and a sticky thread would be easy.
