Did some flintknapping today

I did some flintknapping today. I can't hold a candle to any of the greats but I enjoy it just the same. Thought I would share this one, I was making a little dart point out of an obsidian slab, stopped about half way through and brought it inside the house to finish later, wife seen it and thought it was cool as is so I left it.

I like those half finished / half river cobble art works like that. I purchased several that Dwain Rogers made and I like them better then the corner tangs and blades I bought from him. They look great in the relic room and a great conversation piece. Dwain said some of them were harder to make then the complete points.

Wild. Working at that angle in the slab and doing one half before the other would never occur to me. I'd have gone around and around with no square edge left, long before getting to that point on one half. And I certainly wouldn't have notched it at that point.

I can't believe that look wasn't your desired effect.

Did you learn to knap from watching someone or on your own?

Cool piece, kind of has that 'Sword in the Stone' element going on there.

wow, thanks for all the kind words. drdave, I normally don't make them like this either, it's just that obsidian is so easy to pressure flake I was just mess'n around. it started off as a point I was making for my atlatl that I'm working on, well, for a dart tip I should say.
