These pics are from the upper Parguaza River a tributary of the Orinoco river and a place were three ecosystems converge ; llanos, lowland rainforest, and the Guayana Shield. The fellow with all the beads is a Piaroa Shaman named Jose Louis and I spent much living with him and his family learning what I could of everything I could. The Anaconda was asleep and Isnapped this photo seconds befor I grabbed it and wrestled it into our Bongo ( large dug out boat) much to the amuzement of my Piaroa guides. The Catalya orchids festoon the trees along the river. Many times we have drag the boat around rapids and shallow water. The butterfly is a Green Malachite sitting in a Mango tree. The pictograph of the jumping deer looking over it's shoulder is Mapoyo Indian and resides in Cueva de Tigre at the foot of Cerro Muerto and is a small burial cave with pot burials (Mapoyo) and one Piaroa burial were the body was wrapped in Moriche palm leaves. The Piaroa came into this area soon after the mass suicide of all the Mapoyo men about 1919 from a nearby tributary called the Llumena(pronounced Ju-mayna). Through my investigations I pieced the tragic story of the Mapoyo together but it will have to wait for another time.

What!? Don't leave us hanging like that! Amazing pictures and story, what on earth made them commit suicide like that?

Global Warming

Sorry global warming seems to be the blame of everything else. Nice pics by the way, very interesting.
I agree we need to know more.
