Hey Bobby - That little dog is great to have around. We got her as a friend for the big dog. They are best buds. Its hard to say for sure what she really is. Its just a guess. The markings and character led to that mix and guess. She is a killer too. She took down a ground squirrel in 2 shakes of her head. Countless other rodents. Her biggest fault is that she gets very obsessed about a critter in a bush. So on that note, I can't take her out when it gets snakey. Also she has been skunked 3 times now and I'm sure there is another one coming.

I think your pick is probably right on the money as far as breeds. It has the Border Collie head, ears, eyes, hair and the torso. It also has the colors, markings, short legs and like you said attitude of a Jack Russel.
Collies are born herders and will nip its subject but usually won't attack. Jacks however are born killers of smaller and sometimes larger opponents. They were bred to be rat killers and I have seen one actually go down a large hole and not only fight a coon underground but kill and drag the coon out. It was one of my buddies male Jacks and he wasn't worried in the least, I was kinda freaking out thinking he was going to lose his best dog. The dog came backing out of the hole dirty and bloody dragging out a coon bigger than him. They are extremely powerful for their size and have the don't back down attitude of a pit bull.
That is a beautiful dog.

Here's a couple more pics of Jake. You may be right about some shepard in him. My last dog was a shepard mix and he was a really good dog, smart as could be. Ol' Jake is a bone collector from way back.

He gets alot of comments from locals, like, " man that's a funny looking dog " and " he's got a really big head " lol.

My dog Bear passed today. My wife and I came home from work this afternoon to find that he had suffocated with a lays potato chip bag stuck on his head. Very unexpected. We are very sad. He was a smart dog! The only thing he lacked were thumbs to get that damn bag off his head. He loved us unconditionally and gave us his all. Make sure your hounds can't get in the trash! :-( Jay

Jay, so sorry. Doesn't matter how or why or even age, still so hard to lose a pet you love. I've never had just one dog, always two or more. Makes it a tiny bit easier when you lose one.

Jay, so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend, I was sent this email a while back after I had lost my dog Charr,
I thought it might be of some comfort to you and your family as well

Quote:
A Dog's Purpose? (From a 6-year-old).

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.''

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try to live.

He said,' People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?''
The Six-year-old continued,' Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.''

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

That was awesome Buckeye.

Jay sorry to hear that, who would have ever thought a potato chip bag could be that deadly for a dog?
