Giant moth emerged today.

Found this critter in the front yard. Was there until the sun set. One bird took an antenna but he fared well on day one. Never spread its wings for me to get a good shot.

Best I can tell it's a Polyphemus Moth. Found these examples posted on line over the past five years in my area all appearing within the first/second week of March.

WOW! That's awful early for a Polyphemus Moth to emerge. They don't typically appear around here until April. The most common Saturniidae here in CA is the Ceonothus Silk Moth, a large moth that resembles a Cecropia.

7 degrees here at noon, so no moths emerging here. Have I mentioned how sick I am of winter?

Very cool pictures Shannon. Thanks for sharing those.

We have this around here. I have actually been to this town and there are some strange characters there to say the least.
