Morel Report

Anyone finding any shrooms yet? I think this year will be a good one with all the rain and snow melt we've had. Hope so anyway.

I think the only thing that can compete with walking fields and creeks this time of year is a batch or 6 of tasty sauted morels.

They should start coming up around here at the end of April or first part of May depending on the weather. I hope we have a good season this year because last year was to dry....they are great sauteed, or fried.
Happy hunting, hope you find all want! Joyce

Guess I should elaborate... I have yet to find one in the three years I have been here. But I do see where guys and gals on the internet are finding them just 45 mins north of me. They are claiming they are finding most of them around poplar trees. Is this where you all are finding them? If not any other tips would be appreciated. Also do you go by time of year, temperature, or rainfall?
Thanks,
Josh

No luck here either..they should be here by next week I hope! I noticed thegreatmorel.com site hasn't updated for 2011 yet. Always a good place for info on morels.

I can tell you where we find them up here and that is around dead Elms. When I go to the woods to hunt I look for the very easy to see dead Elm, it looks like a white pole with the bark gone, Also find some in Apple Orchards. Up here the weather is important to how good the hunt will be. Need some warm days and nights with good moisture to make a good season, and the time of the year is late April/May. Another thing I look for is the Lilacs blooming, good indication that Morels are ready to hunt. Joyce

Thanks Joyce! We have been getting rain all morning and the low was about 55 degrees and the highs are going to be around 65-70. So I am thinking now is the time!

JDSouth, they should be coming up now in your area because I'm north of you. I find the majority near poplar trees but like Joyce said, old elms, and apple trees are definitely worth checking out. I have found alot of big yellows growing beside old apple trees. Sycamores can be productive as well.

Other indicators for our area imo are look for morels when the dogwoods are in bloom, and when the mayapples unfold.

I started to tell you that they do not grow here and then I saw a website where someone close by found around 90 only three days ago. Guess Ill have to rethink and check out a spot or two. 10 years ago people said that I was crazy when I told them we had groundhogs and coyotes here.

Digger I thought the same thing. I have never seen one, but after looking on the internet they are finding them somewhere. Thus far it seems easier to find artifacts then morrels. So the search continues...
