Question Primitive hunter

Would like to talk with anyone out there also interested in hunting, spearfishing with primitive bows, and atlatls. I personaly have yet to make ether one but have a yerning to make both. Keeping eyes open for that right chunck of wood. I live in nw Ill and am wondering what the natives in my area made there atlatl and arrow shafts out of? Have got a few tools of the trade, draw knife, rasp and files, hatchet, still looking for a spoke shave. Also have started building a knapers tool kit (1 lrg antler bilit, 2 home made lead filled copper bopers, various hammer stones, and since I work in a tire shop all pads are made from old innertubes) still looking for some good local flint, chert. So far all the large chuncks found when relic hunting have lots of fractures running threw them so cant get a good core or flake for that matter. Have been practicing on Ill obsidian (beer bottles and pickle jars) with moderet sucses. Would love to see anyones self bows / atlatls. Also any acumpaning hunting stories involving the use of such.
P.S what is the deal with heat treatng chert, how not somutch the why, was told that most points made from Burlington chert were treated, this being one of the more commen materials in my area.:
