uninvited camp guest
My best friend and I were kicking back after a long day of fly-fishing (and a little artifacting). We camp in a remote spot off the lake, and it was a very hot day. We had this guy slither into camp and buzz when he came within 18" of the dog! He snuck in within 10 feet of each of us. Tony shoo-ed the dog away, and I was in charge of evicting the rattler without harming him, which I did, using a Gem scoop as a snake hook/ lacrosse stick. Still can't believe he showed up!

Cool and thanks for not killing him. Just probably trying to find food or a cool spot to hide.

oh, I'm a snake kinda guy. I did not offer him a beer, though. You should have heard my friend, Tony: "You're too F%cking close!" I wasn't.

Beautiful snake. I might not have been as nice though. I hope you slept off the ground. What lake were you fishing and did you do any good? I love stillwater fly fishing.

we had a tent (zipped up!). I've been a big snake guy all my life, so, no harm, no foul; even if I did lacrosse toss him a few yards at a time.
We were at Eagle lake, up in Lassen County. My biggest trout was 19ish". My buddy had a few that were 22+". Beautiful fish. The flesh is so orange, most people think it is a salmon. |

Think I would have asked him to stay for dinner.

That's a great picture. It's a good thing you guys noticed him when you did. My buddies dog was bit on the nose last month in south Texas.

The dog lived but he hasn't fully recovered yet...this was only about 3 weeks ago. He was at his ranch near Freer, Tx when it happened. They had to drive to Corpus Christi to get him looked at. I like hunting remote places, but it leaves little room for accidents.
