Luna Moth poses for Photograph...

Well, I did not find any artifacts this morning in the creek after two hours of hunting. I usually watch a few coyotes and raccoons and deer, but did not see any wildlife this morning except for this actias luna, commonly known as the luna moth. Since he posed nicely and since I do not see them that often, I figured I would snap a photograph.

Thumbs up

Steve,

Nice shot...I don't know that I've ever seen one of those.

Trask, I don't think they exist west of the Central Plains, but I could be wrong. They are unique and are usually pretty large; about 4 inches across. I have only ever seen one other here in Kansas. I have attached that photograph below as well.

There is a small colony of actius luna here in Yolo Co, CA. They were released from UCD under mysterious circumstances and are feeding on walnut leaves. Very uncommon, but I have captured two.

Pretty common in Mo but that doesn't mean you'll see one every night. They cast a giant shadow when they are way up by a pole light. If you are looking down when the shadow swoops by it feels like something is after you.

Kansas, the moth in that last pic looks to have just emerged from its case.
