Spiny Softshell Turtle in Kansas Stream

Went hiking/arrowhead hunting this morning with my neighbor. He caught this wonderful Spiny Softshell turtle (Apalone spinifera). What an agressive little turtle unlike the Smooth Softshell turtle that also inhabits the same waters. I found one piece of pottery, but no arrowheads.

What part of him is the 'spiny' part, other than its claws and attitude!? Looks like you may have put a little extra excitement into his day, and him to yours.
