Nevada Big Horns

Ran into a herd of big horns. Thought you might enjoy seeing them.

Bolder City Park

Ya in the shade of a Mesquite tree in a small park just outside of the Lake Mead rec area. Protected they are not afraid of people but still a neat animal to see. You can get close but they are still wild and will not let you to close.

good that they are protected , we have an endangered sub-species here in san diego, weve lost almost half of the population in the last couple years to some desease and mountain lion predation, they have been darted and vaccinated but it dosnt seem to be doing the job, only acouple hundred left, they are also somewhat tame here , not unusual to see them on the golf course, in my younger days i would hike up the mountain to where they bedded and take pictures of them but those days are gone just like the days when they were many

We have a few of these up in Washington along the Columbia in the eastern side of the mountains. They are doing well and growing in numbers along the Yakima river canyon. I have a single horn off one of these that came out of a Indian camp at Vantage so I know they hunted them. Makes it kind of special to see them knowing that that the Indian people hunted them in the past. Hope they can save yours in California.

Cool pics of cool critters. There's petroglyphs of big horn sheep all over the place in the Great Basin. They must of been a very important resource for the indians.

Yes, and interesting that many of those Petroglyphs are where the sheep are no more. Think they (the indians) killed them off in some regions?

That's certainly a possibility but I would guess white people had more to do with it.
