Foul Weather Gear
Having spent virtually my entire life in outdoor pursuits with the vast majority of those having been spent in the Coastal Oregon Rain Forests, I have come to some hard earned conclusions on staying dry. The Winters in the NW are hard on gear...It's always wet, fairly cool, windy and the brush is course. To stay comfortable and dry I have concluded you MUST have outerwear that is Highly durable, WATERPROOF, and breathable. I have found the "Breathable" criteria is almost impossible to be 100% waterproof....Sit in a puddle of water for an hour and most anything short of PVC will begin to wick..Even 500$ Sitka Pants..So it becomes a balancing act..This is the Best I've found for active pursuits in this climate: Feel free to add your preferences ect.
Boots: The only Boot I've EVER owned that stays dry under ANY condition and is light and comfortable enough to jog in: DANNER STRIKER II: ![]() PANTS: Grunden is a Standard here in the NW for good reason..Look At what the Commercial Fisherman and Loggers Prefer...They make Great Stuff Period. Weather Boss Pants: Suspenders, Cargo Pockets and SUPER DURABLE..They Stay Dry If treated with a Non-silicone spray regularly and they breath very well. They have internal gaters at the boot cuff that act like a gasket..I've waded past my knees and stayed dry. ![]() Jacket: This is the best jacket I've owned if it's raining "sideways"..It's not breathable but it's 100% dry and fits extremely well..Including neoprene cuffs so nothing goes up your sleeve. Grunden Brigg 44 Parka:

As a supplement I would add that A high quality, NON-SILICONE, air dry, spray on waterproofer is a god send for keeping dry
This stuff will make your baseball cap function like a ducks back for a few trips...I always keep a can in my truck box![]()

Trask-i can see you are into gear, guess i am too. we get all weather here in missouri- we get the sideways rain too. i like to wear goretex chest waders and a hooded goretex jacket in heavy rain, keeps me dry in a downpour.
also i have some waterproof sealskinz socks that come up to my knees. its easy to wear the socks and still have dry feet no matter what shoes or boots i wear. the socks are $50 a pair, but worth it. although this has nothing to do with foul weather gear, check out this new shovel i bought for digging. it weighs 4 pounds, and is solid steel. made by predator tools-called the raven 25 and its purposely designed for artifact digging. the blade is sharp like a knife and has root cutters built in each side. i have been using it for about five months now-best shovel i ever owned. feels more like a weapon than a shovel. ![]() ![]() ![]() willy
