Baby Screech Owl story

Another bird story....

This one was brought to me when someone cut down a tree with a nest in it. This baby survived the fall and was just getting his feathers so had to be cared for until he was able to fly.
The picture is of him shortly after he arrived, needed heat lamp to keep him warm still.
The video is of him when he was learning to fly. He liked sitting on the shelf next to the sink where he could see outside. Nothing like having a living, flying, shelf ornament!
The reason he is chattering and moving his head like that is because he did not know what the camera was.... Joyce

That is really cool Comanche, he does look like your Owl!

Thank you so much for the nice comment!
Its a good feeling to release an animal back into the wild that would not have had a chance to make it without human intervention!
I could talk for days about animals that I have had the pleasure of having in my care.....Many great memories!!! Joyce

Well at first ground up meat rolled in bone meal... later small rodents whole, or pieces, they will spit up the fur maybe the next day and will look like a little pellet!

Thanks Fluff, It does take time and patience!
He is a cute bird I think! The Screech Owl is the so small compared to some of the other Owls, so I think that is what makes me think he is cute! Joyce

That's good of you to take care of it, owls are cool critters. Two different times I have had owls scare the crap out of me. The last time almost gave me heart failure. I saw a little overhang so I went to investigate. As soon as I poked my head inside it came flying out while screeching the whole time. I was lucky I didn't fall over backwards!

Cool owl. Did you wear gloves to handle him? Her's a pic of a small owl that kept me company when feeding last winter. Lou

Thanks arrow, its something that I really enjoy doing but I don't do it as much as I used to. Still I can't turn anyone down, if the need is there and I can help in some way, I will.
I have been scared kinda like you with the Owl flying out in your face, one time I was walking through a field of tall grass and had some Quail fly up just before I stepped on them...I Almost had a heart failure!
