Along with the fines, probation, community service, Trent needs a choking, too.

This isn't the first time I've heard about someone defacing rock art. I'll never understand what motivates a person do such a thing.

Pretty sad.

What is also sad is that if that's all the better they can color match the paint to camoflauge the background........ maybe they can use some of the fine money to send the conservator to kindergarten as I've seen some 5 year olds do better. Hate to hack on a guy trying to do right but the pics in Tom's like are pitiful.

Abject stupidity. Not ignorance which can be rectified but STUPID. Probably thought no more about it then a dog peeing on a rock.

I've seen vandalized rock art more times than I can count. Usually it's people etching their names into it. It does seem to happen a lot less frequently than it used to which is good but it should NEVER happen.

I agree with your conclusion and think you have accurately identified the intellectual deficit of Trent and other imbeciles who would or have done this sort of thing, but I still can't understand how the thought even enters ones mind. I have had the pleasure of visiting several sites with really exceptional examples of rock art and the since of awe they inspire in me just makes it VERY difficult to fathom. There may also be an element of narcissism in that type of transgression.

It actually occurred more often in the 19th Century than it does today. I have seen pioneer's names and dates carved on petroglyphs and pictographs in several places out west. Most folks, except those from large urban centers, are understanding of the fragile nature of these examples of Native American "graffiti".
