The deserts of Nevada are no place for tourist....

this article proves that! If you are a tourist in Nevada I would recommend sticking to Vegas and Reno. Minivan + muddy road in the middle of nowhere = a very bad idea!

Yikes. Most people think the "pack" I keep in my vehicle is silly but you just never know. Especially if you're going to have to set off on foot. I'm afraid that poor bugger is toast.

Same old unfortunate story..People underestimate how vast the Great basin Deserts are and because we as a culture do almost all of our traveling in vehicles we have forgotten the massive amount of energy required to walk back out once we are hopelessly marooned.

No one prepares for the "worst case" anymore and the sucky reality is that when the worst case happens the unprepared are most likely to become statistics.

My dad was a commercial pilot so I have been indoctrinated into "no second chances" my whole life...We couldn't sit down in a movie theater without my Dad mapping out an exit strategy for the family should the place catch on fire..It seems looney but it's one way to ensure your genes keep getting passed on.

I think these stories should serve to keep us uncomfortable and cautious when traveling in "way outback". Everyone that spends enough time in remote areas is gonna have a potentially serious situation at some point..It's a statistical fact. The good news: A huge amount of those situations can be simply uncomfortable if your prepared.

Scary stuff...I too keep a loaded pack with supplies in the truck...granted we have nothing but cornfields here but some of the national forest I hike in are pretty vast.
