I wasn't sure either until I thought about it. They were most likely hunted to extinction by man, just the same as the Passenger pigeon, the Thylacine, and others. And I wouldn't have a problem seeing them brought back via cloning, it would be like "setting a wrong back to right" IMO.

Interesting point Scotto, I'm not sure if mankind is solely responsible for their extinction, my guess would be climate change had a large part in it but I'm just guessing.
Either way, righting a wrong by mankind is a rare opportunity.....The mammoth wouldn't be as bad as reincarnating the sabertoothy kitty!

Besides, after a while we will be able to pay for a mammoth safari and try our hand at taking one down with our atl-atl to hang above the fire place!

Let me get this straight......mammoth, very large animal that I'm sure will become violent when angered....just like a modern day elephant. You guys are gonna attack this thing on open ground with pointy rocks tied to a shaft.....good thinking!.....this has all the ingrediants of a disaster.................I'm in!

I have no problem with the cloning. First it will cost a fortune and it's not like there will be an instant herd. Secondly, if they produce one he or she will live a life if leisure with plenty off food, shelter and attention. Thirdly, it will be a huge scientific advance, albeit sad that it's not lead by the US of A. But then we seem to be forfeiting all our scientific leads.

I actually killed a mammoth in Skyrim last night. Took me about fifty arrows, but he was on top of a cliff - too angry to run away, but too high up and steep for him to get at me. Got a tusk, some trunk to eat later, and he had swallowed a couple of gemstones too!

I am really liking Skyrim quite a lot!
