Later Indians were collectors too. Doc. G found a Clovis point in a stone box grave once.

The whole description lends to confusion, in my opinion. When the clovis point was lost there by someone 12,000 years ago....... There were no mounds.

People dig the mound area and come across something that was lost long before the mounds were created.

Seems pretty simple.

I agree with Dr. Dave, it seems pretty strait forward to me. It's not the first time people have been surprised and found Clovis relics under later layers. Gault comes to mind.

Mike,
Town Creek is probably one of the most carefully investigated sites in the country. Even though they leveled the mound years ago (it is rebuilt), and a lot of the plaza area has been excavated, there are still a lot of areas that have not been touched. This Clovis was apparently found in one of the "new" areas close to the river, in a carefully controlled dig. It may just be an isolated find, but there was considerable Early Archaic activity there, with hundreds of Hardaway, Palmer and Kirks found on this site. Before his death, Coe wrote a fine book on his 50 years excavating there- "Town Creek Indian Mound".
