Going by past articles, Newspaper Reporter is a low paid job with not very rigorous standards re comprehension of what's involved.

I imagine the 4,000 may be to cover the digging " damage " , not the artifacts themselves . But I guess you could tear-up 4,000 dollars worth of pottery by carelessly digging into a mound or Kiva . Anyways he's in a heap of trouble AND they will make every penny they can to set an example . db

This is why I don't like digging. It gives us surface hunter a bad name and sooner or later that point will work its way out of the ground.

Jeremy its not all digging that gives you surface hunters a bad name, its no worse than picking up a point if its on protected land. I would almost bet there are twice as many if not more surface hunters in places like that than diggers.
