Hey I know this guy!

Arrowheadologist pleeo!

Artifact hunting looks at the ancient past

When Paul Olsen came to the Bandera area in the late ‘70s, he didn’t know much about Native American artifacts. But someone introduced him to the hobby of hunting for arrowheads and he was hooked.

Today, Olsen enjoys searching for artifacts and has amassed quite a collection. He doesn’t know exactly how many pieces he has accumulated, but he did use the phrase “a lot.”

While he is not a professional, his years of collecting and self-education have made him something of a local expert in the field.

Full story here.

How'd I know you would find this Shannon! I liked most of the article. The "little respect for anyone who uses heavy equipment" didn't come from me (maybe the "archaeologist"). Nor did I say "much" of my collection comes from surface hunting. Other than that, it was good. There are a couple nice color pictures that don't appear in the online edition. Paul

So I have the "70's" to blame for missing out on some of those killers you have!? Dang 70's. I was still in elementary school through the 70's.

Seriously, I hope the article brings you many phone calls from locals wanting you to show them how it's done. Just don't forget us little people when they come calling.

Hey, Paul:

Carolyn Edwards did call me, but not about the story which she already
had written at the time (Mon.). She wanted my permiso to use 3 artifact drawings out of the Digging into South Texas Prehistory book. I told her that the Stone Artifacts volume had better pictures, but she said she went to the Bandera Library, and all 3 copies were missing. They obviously need more copies...

So, I don't know what "professional archaeologists" she is quoting. I certainly have never felt that it should be "illegal" for folks to dig on "private land." I surely detest the mechanized Easter egg hunts in this part of the world, but
there's nothing illegal about it.

I thought it was a nice article. She writes better than them folks over at the
Bulletin!

Tom
