Personally, I would'nt even consider desecrating a gravesite or mound, no matter what I would find. I'll take my chances in the fields, rivers and creeks and cherish what items I do find. Not messing with someones buried ancestors.
I totally agree. In my opinion, it is no different than going to the cemetary and cracking open someone's casket hoping to find something cool. It blows my mind that someone would just throw around human remains. There is a farmer near us that has an intact indian grave on his farm. I have seen pictures of it but he will not let anyone on his land. He has also used VERY strong language to describe what he would do trespassers on his land. I used to think he was crazy but now not so much.

"Tolley said he'd like to see collectors, archeologists and Indian groups come up with some kind of permit system for collecting with strict standards and penalties to try to prevent some of the wreckage."
Wouldn't this just suck! I don't think we need new laws regarding burials. Especially as this guy wanted to have permit process for collectors, archaeologists etc. As usual, if we enforced the laws that are in place there would be a lot less problems. It is already a Felony in this state. It also bothers me that these knuckleheads that are out digging graves are often being lumped with legitimate hunters and collectors. It is like the media referring to Poachers as hunters whenever they report an endangered species or another animal killed illegally. It was even just a small byline or afterthought in this story that surface hunting arrowheads was ok. JMHO Last edited by erb; 11-16-2010 at 10:38 AM. |

I agree that ANY Burial site found should be protected against anyone who might disturb the final Resting place of people.
Here in Central Texas The remains of an Ancient Paleo Aged skeleton were found while building a road.CedarPark360.com - Leanderthal Lady ,,But ,,the remains are sitting some where at The University of Texas Archaeology Dept,,,,all in the name of Science. I could be wrong,,,But I think this is just as bad as any other Burial site disturbance,,,Btw,,,Do you think they stopped the road from going in? Hell NO,,,they just did A little study and went on about thier business///c

How many do you think got excavated and were never reported. knuckleheads that are out digging graves are often being lumped with legitimate hunters and collectors. It is like the media referring to Poachers as hunters This is also a huge problem too....people just by nature tend to stereotype just TOO much. IMO it's just too lazy to try and find out the facts.

I respect your opinion a lot and do not mean this in an argumentative way. With 13,000 or so years of burials in the United States if we did not disturb many of them we would not have a straight stretch of highway anywhere in the U.S.. I agree that many in the past could have and should have been handled differently and much more respectfully and in many cases not disturbed at all. I do believe for the most part current laws and practices have done a much better job of respecting and handling human remains and burial sites. |
