diggin old dumps

secondary to artifact hunting, or coincided with, i enjoy digging old dumps. never kno what ur gonna find, but the rush of finding an old blob top soda or a rare colored medicine for example is exciting and addicting, comparable to finding a nice arrowhead. i've found 3 nice points unexpectedly digging dumps, and what a rush. I've literally got hundreds of marbles from 40's 50's dumps.. got alot of old buttons i save. couple pipes. found a insulator cache once digging dumps.. had green clear and porcelain mostly.. weird!! i do the fossill thing occasionally.. got creek found horse/bison teeth collection..got some shed antlers.. a plummet style lead fishing weight collection.. collect odd trinkets/tokens etc from metal detecting... enjoy morel mushroom hunting and me gots some honeyholes for that.. even save killer wicked old cedar tree stumps lol lost my mind along time ago!! gotta have back-up plans for when the arrowheads arn't biting lol

Jason you sound a whole lot like me you poor guy! lol

We've got an old dump here, right behind where an old schoolhouse was in the 1800s. Lots of cool bottle, marbles and stuff comes out of there.

I too am afflicted w/ old dump disease. I collect the small colored glass medicines, 6 1/2 ounce pop bottles, and any really old stuff I run across. I have nice displays of the colored glass on shelves and windows though out the house(the wife even likes these!). The old pop bottles are back in my trophy room w/ the rocks.(They aren't as pretty so she frowns on them?)

rummaging for pics but can't find them at the moment,

Well, I can relate to all that stuff as well and just in case you need another hobby... one that goes nicely with the old dump thing is learning how to flintknapp. The old bottle bottoms, the gallon sized ones in particular, are great for learning to make arrowheads/knives. That's how I learned, hi-lex bleach bottle bottle bottoms and a piece of an old crock made for lots of fun knapping. And if you don't get into that but do find a lot of those glass bottoms let me know, I would buy some from you!

I could start collecting bottle bottoms for you. I leave all the old clorox bottles(brown 1gal and 1/2 gal) in the dumps at the moment and there are other large items I don't bother with. Give me a better idea what you want to knap and I'll post some images of what I drag home. I'd ship it your way for cost of mailing.

thanks for breakin the ice on this thread scotto,i started thinkin i was the ONLY crazy one out their lol, glad u found the pics,fldwlkr... those colored ones in the window...that's just downright cool. How the hell do u get em so clean? just toothbrush and water?? cannonman17... y'all are readin me, man... it's the one thing i forgot to mention, that i'm into flintknapping as well. Got into it pretty heavily for awhile about 6 years ago when i was out of work. got frustrated after awhile of trying to teach myself... ouch, bruises on my thighs the size of pancakes, beatin the hell out of myself, haha.. Got smart quickly, and purchased the best of chips, and things started working out pretty nicely! still got all 3 of those books and those babys are the secret to some success!!(and the videos too) i occasionally knap the large bottoms, also.. have not tried crock bottoms, didnt know that u could, but i got two 5 gallon buckets of the peices of a toilet, lol (the tank part).. knaps easily but breaks easily, too, but it's great for practicing. I'm not very good, but i get into it. I'll start savin the big bottoms , and i've got some cool other glass peices too. no charge, maybe a trade of some sort
