Agatized Wood, Palmwood

Louisiana has some very high quality petrified wood, and I try to get examples when I can. The Catahoula formation that contains most of it runs through central Louisiana and into southeast Texas. I was fortunate to have known the two biggest palmwood collectors that probably moved a hundred tons over a 50 year span. One of them did it for the fun of the trade, and sold everything he got. The other cherry picked the best and ended up with about 50 perfect museum pieces. He sold most of those to Frank Daniels and you can read about it and see some of the examples on this link.

Oligocene Gallery Louisiana

The oldschool rockhounds are just about gone, and like Indian artifact collecting it is getting more and more difficult to find hunting ground or old collections.

These photos are a sample of what I collect.

Really beautiful material.

I have seen only a few examples of silicified palmwood found in the Central Plains ...it's rarely found in this region.

Great looking pieces. Mark Adams sent me a bunch of smaller pieces of both a while back. It's some beautiful material.

did the formation were thoes pices came from volcanic, like the famous Petrafied Forest out west or was it some other prosess? just wondering because i didn't think Louisiana was that geologicly active. my uncle has a few perafied examples from north cental Arkansas that he found in the creeks that we fish, but they aren't agetized, what causes this to ocure? also was watching on tv in Navda were they were fineding opalized wood. is it the compositon of the soil that determins wether or not or with what they are mineralized with? don't want to lay all kinds of questions on you but i like rocks espeshaly ones that tell interesting parts of history.
P.S. apologize for my spelling it's not my strong suit.lol
