Meteorite?
So who can help me ID what appears to be a meteorite that I screened out while lokkin for arrow heads? It is magnetic but I have heard that there are other rocks that are magnetic that are meteorwrongs. This one is all black and burned up lookin.
I can take a few pictures up close and send them to anyone that may be able to help. Thanks Marshall |

Pictures would most likely help a bit! Have you done a streak test with it?

Agreed, you will get alot more help posting a few pics. In the mean time, you can google regmaglyts and fusion crust.
***EDIT*** "Regmaglypts" (spelling error)

Agreed again... Meteorite hunting got me hooked on arrowhead hunting. (My first find was a broken celt...ahhh
) Talk about a situational reversal!

Here are some close up views of what appears to be meteorites. Thay are all attracted to a magnet. In my camera viewer the real close shots look kinda brown so I dont know what this will look like here but they are all black. When I first posted this I had only found one. So I went back with a magnet and picked up several more from the same spot. Maybe the indians thought they were unique and brought them to the camp. The slick ones dont seem to have the same mass as other rocks I have of the same size(non meteorites). The sandy lookin one are also light as well but stangely they became magnetized after bein exposed to my magnet. They spin round on the table like a compass needle when brought next to each other. If there is a slight chance that these are meteorites and someone lives close to north Dallas maybe we can git together and let you have a real look at them. Thanks for any help.

Do all meteorites magnatize? If so, then I learned something. I do think that if you had a handful of genuine meterorites, they could be worth a lot. Does anyone out there know just how rare and sought out meteorites are? I was under the impression that they are valuable.

Sorry Marshall, those look like hematite concretions to me as well:
hematite concretions Actually, putting them next to a straight pin and seeing if there is any draw is a test for meteo-wrong. manoman - the most common of meteorites is iron (iron-nickel). As far as them magnetizing from "picking them up with magnets" no they shouldn't be magnetized. Some collectors use magnetic bases on their display stands actually. Value is based size/weight, meteorite type, etc. Also, think about them like coins and arrowheads. Demand kind of sets the price. DISCLAIMER: I am not a pro on meteorites or a collector. I bought a nantan on ebay that ended up floor diving thanks to my cat. It had a stress fracture and now it is in several pieces. If you want to see some awesome looking meteorites, google "canyon diablo".
