Modern Crystal Quartz Clovis

Wasnt sure where to post it but this looks OK. I found a nice Creek tumbled Crystal a little smaller than a soda can and had a knapper make me a Clovis. Also found another good knapper and bought this Corner notch.

Man Tom! You are fast with that hammer whenever anyone anywhere mentions modern knapped pieces! I feel like 75% of the things that I know about artifacts come from the hundreds of points that I have knapped over the years. Knappers can provide so much info that others cannot about a point that it more than justifies the craft. I cannot be responsible for those knappers that sell their stuff as old and do not condone it, but to condemn all modern pieces is just short sighted IMHO.

Nice pieces! Love the Quartz one.

Here is a pic of one I made just so The Hammer can get another workout!

Beautiful Pieces,,,But I'm kinda with Tom on this one
And on the other hand I am with Matt.
Modern pieces are fine with me as long as they are marked somehow permanently!
The vast amount I have learned from some modern Kappers can not compare to just examining a point alone.///
Great Clovis,,,btw//c

Then you haven't really spent time talking to a good knapper that knows artifacts as well. I guess it depends on how interested in the production process of the point you are. Knowing knapping will tell you things like "is this point a Hardin or not?" If you know knapping or a knapper you will see that there is an absolutely diagnostic type of flake and tool used to make it that shows up on them and not one other similar types. Just an example.

I hope Tom knows that everything I said was in good humor! We ahve had this same discussion on the other board before and I know how he feels and thats fine with me. Sorry if I ruffled any feathers.

Matt ,,
After re-reading my post this morning,,,I Must apologize.
I was not very clear in my response.
I HAVE Gained a great amount of knowledge from modern Knappers,,,esp, Bob Patton
One of the reasons I like to use Dwain Rogers and Jeff Baker is because I know they both knap and know there stuff pretty well.
From what I have learned ,,I have been able to scrutinize flakes in the field, and can tell the age of some pieces I have collected based on the knapping style,,,
But that does not change my mind about "modern pieces" that are not marked permanently somehow,,,They ruin the market for ancient artifacts/jmo///c

Glad to see that we agree! Every type of collecting that I (or anybody I know) has ever been involved in is to some extent subject to frauds, fakes, and repros.........some people will do anything to make a buck.

I have an artifact book from the 50's and the author states that all collectors "should appeal to their lawmakers to have flintknapping be labled as criminal activity"! Thought that was an interesting statement.

Now thats just kinda rediculous,,,,But belive you me I do not like modern pieces that are not marked,,,and anyone knapping should take the responsibility to keep this hobby pure

Otherwise,,, I question their intent and integrity,,,sure they sell the pieces as reprodution but how do they know what happens to the pieces after they leave their hands///c
