Think they were pretty big with the aborigines. The sound can be heard over great distance and I recall reading about an all male ceremony that used bullroarers. The women supposedly had to stay far away...
Then there is the Midnight Oil song called "Bullroarer" - Somones collage to the song. That band is HUGE on aborigine rights. Great question though!
EDIT: Thanks for bringing this up. We spend our hunts with nose to the dirt looking for ancient stone that was altered by natives. Some people just want to find points and some people care about the society behind it. I admit to my ignorance on Aborigines. Time I learned what is really going on. I would be quite the fool to be disgusted with the treatment of Native Americans without knowing that same exploitation is still happening.
